12th: Springfield Life from Stone Sauvignon Blanc (2018)
1st: Painted Wolf Paarl Roussanne (2014)
Let’s have a look at Painted Wolf!
Jeremy and Emma, the founders, produced their first wine, the Borg Family Shiraz, in 2005. From the beginning, they wanted to grow their vineyard in a sustainable way.
Since then, Painted Wold wines became more popular and more people joined the wine company as the production increased. Nowadays, Painted Wolf is one of the most famous wineries in South-Africa.
The Paarl Roussanne:
Roussanne is a single varietal originating from the warm regions of France’s Rhone valley. It is a relative newcomer and very rare to find it in South Africa. There are less than 10 South African producers and Painted Wolf is proud to be ranked amongst the best ones.
The Paarl Roussanne is a medium bodied wine with citrus, white peach and creamy aromas.[M1] The wine has a lovely texture with a long finish and fresh acid keeping it vivacious and vibrant. The wine will be sealed with a diam cork, which is unusual for South African bottles.
Did you know? Painted Wolves or African wild dogs are Southern Africa’s rarest and most endangered carnivore. There are only 6600 dogs left!
2nd: Bizoe Henrietta (2017)
Bizoe Wines is the creation of vintner Rikus Neethling, who takes a hands-on approach to his artisanal winemaking. It is a combination of his love and interest for this beautiful country and his vinous creations on offer.
Bizoe Wines philosophy is: “small is better”. That’s why only small quantities will be produced and only the very best grapes are used to keep a handcrafted wines process.
The Henrietta features and tasting notes:
The grapes have been specially selected in the Franschhoek region to create state of the art wines. All the grapes used are harvested early in the morning to preserve the natural aromas. It gives to the wine its wisps of orange peel on the palate, fresh tropical fruit aromas and a delicate aftertaste derived from being matured in oak barrels for 7 months.
Did you know? Derived from the French word Bisous – meaning little kiss – the Bizoe winery aims at being close to its consumers.
Officially founded in 1693, Saxenburg is one of the oldest farms in South Africa. Thanks to the combination of the perfect climatic conditions and a skilled team, Saxenburg’s wines are well known in South Africa and internationally. The wine maker believes that exceptional wines are made on the vine, so they practice a well-managed system of summer pruning to keep yields low. With fewer bunches left, grapes mature into a finer quality and less craft is required in the cellar.
The Private Collection Chardonnay tasting note:
This Chardonnay shows lovely citrus fruit, ripe pineapple flesh and some nutty characters on the nose. A full-bodied Chardonnay that ends with a nice fresh acidity. Creamy tannins also contributes to the flavours.
Did you notice? The emblem of Saxenburg is three guinea fowls which they are very proud of even though they’re not the most regal animals!
