More about the Winner: Thelema Cabernet Sauvignon 2014 : The Vineyard: The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon from the Thelema estate came first at our last Top12Wines tasting of South African red wines (grape varieties and mixed blends). Thelema Winery is located in Stellenbosch, just off Cape Town in South Africa, on a beautiful estate with spectacular mountain views and you can even see beautiful peacocks on the property. Located at the top of the Helshoogte Pass, it is also one of the highest altitude and coolest areas in the region. High altitude and deep red soils are ideal for producing high quality grapes. Tasting Notes: Complex and stylish, with aromas of ripe blackcurrant, dark chocolate and pencil shavings. This wine is bone dry, yet exhibits a lovely sweet fruit character on the palate, with a lovely long finish.
About Cabernet Sauvignon:
Cabernet Sauvignon is generally never vinified pure. The rigor of this grape needs to be wrapped in a little fat and sweetness that brings the merlot. This is not the case in the New World countries as in South Africa, where we like the 100% Cabernet Sauvignon wines. The warmer climates allow for a more mature maturation and give Cabernet Sauvignon a little sweeter and rounder, which need less merlot.
